Sustainability in Publishing: Our commitment to Net Zero

In an era where environmental consciousness and social responsibility are at the forefront of global discussions, individuals and businesses are being asked to review their day-to-day practices and embrace sustainability as a guiding principle. The special interest media sector holds a unique position of influence in shaping the narrative of sustainability. Trust is our real commodity and publishers have the power to not only disseminate information on environmental and social issues but also to lead by example through their own actions.

Sustainability in the specialist media sector encompasses the entire lifecycle of publishing – from content creation to consumption – and requires us to address the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of our industry. It’s not just about reducing our carbon footprint; it’s about encouraging best practices amongst supplier businesses and promoting the positive principles of sustainability to the vast and deeply engaged audiences we reach.

The PPA has developed its Action Net Zero Pathway which outlines clear actions for publishers to champion sustainability, recognising that the choices we make today will reverberate through the generations to come.

What is the PPA Action Net Zero Pathway?

The PPA Action Net Zero Pathway was set up for the Publishing Industry to play a role in reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHGe). With the PPA Action Net Zero Pathway, PPA and its signatories aim to decarbonise the publishing industry and achieve net zero emissions across the sector by 2050.

Signatories of the PPA Action Net Zero Pathway commit to work and deliver on five actions, grouped under three categories.

CO2 reduction

Reduce
Address emissions from own operations and electricity consumption (Action 1) and set reduction targets (Action 3)

Influence

Influence
Influence the value chain (suppliers & distributers) through quantifying supply chain emissions (Action 2) and setting reduction targets (Action 3)
Influence downstream value chain (businesses & consumers) through the creation of content that drives behaviour change (Action 4)

Light bulb icon

Promote
